How Do Tower Fans Work?

July - 22 - 2015

Tower fans have become common household appliances due to their stylish design and their increased efficiency in providing with a cool environment when it’s needed of them. While the best tower fans have some sophisticated features, their operating principles are the same for all tower fans. But to better appreciate such an appliance, you have to first understand how it works.

Understanding the basic features

The most distinctive feature of the tower fan is that it can be positioned in spaces that are narrow due to its slim design. While the tower fan isn’t the only type of fan that oscillates, it does it more efficiently due to the wide area of air circulation distribution and coverage. Most modern tower fans have a timer included in the control panel, being able to program the unit to work for several hours before powering off by itself if it has this feature. Another feature that most tower fans come with is the air purification that can be activated by the push of a button located on the control panel. Also, for the convenience of the user, tower fans come with remote controllers to give you the ability to operate them without being in their proximity.

The role of the impeller blades

The impeller blades of the tower fan are housed by the cylindrical container. They move air through the cylindrical column, eliminating it through the vents of the unit. Unlike the propeller blades of ordinary fans, the impeller blades of the tower fans move the air up and down the column, the impellers being almost as tall as the fan unit.

The role of the air blower

The air blower of the tower fan is the housing place of the air impeller. To better understand why it has an important role, keep in mind that the air impeller moves air through a vertical shaft, the inlet being located on the side of the tower fan casing. The air blower distributes the cool air to the room at floor level due to the air blower assembly that allows the air current to move in a vertical wave out of the tower fan.

Safety considerations

To make the tower fan that you own a lasting investment and to make it perform at its best, you have to place it in dry and clean spaces. Certain models are more predisposed to overheating because of the vertical design of the casing. The air moves through the casing, passing through a tight space. The overheating problem occurs due to the fact that the heat travels only upwards and that the tower fan has a lot of components through which the heat travels. That is the reason why theĀ best tower fans use a polarized plug with a wider blade, thus preventing overheating.
